What Boulevard Is About
In the Pigalle district of Paris, in a poor room under the roof of an apartment block, lives young Georges, whom everyone calls Jojo; he ran away from home once he understood that his stepmother had disliked him from the first day. Among his neighbours is Jenny, who dances at a nightclub, and Jojo dreams of being her lover; but Jenny takes up with Dicky, a former boxer who kills time in the cafés of Pigalle. With no steady work, Jojo gets by selling magazines and modelling for painters, and eventually turns to Marietta, a neighbour closer to his own age. When things go badly wrong the boy is overcome by despair and tries to end his own life. In Julien Duvivier’s ninety five minute French film, a young Jean-Pierre Léaud plays Jojo; it was completed in 1960.
