What Bright Victory Is About

Larry Nevins comes home blinded by the war and has to learn both a new life and, harder, himself. Rehabilitation is not really the subject. Nevins is a Southerner carrying his region’s racism, and when he lets a slur slip without knowing that Joe, the closest friend he has made in the hospital, is Black, everything between them breaks at once. Putting that at the centre of a mainstream Hollywood drama in 1951 was not a small decision. Arthur Kennedy was nominated for an Academy Award and took the New York Film Critics Circle award for best actor. James Edwards plays Joe.
