What The Inn of the Sixth Happiness Is About
Rejected as a missionary, the Englishwoman Gladys Aylward paid her own way to China, ran an inn in a remote town and in time became one of its people. When the Japanese invasion came she led around a hundred children over the mountains to safety. Gladys was real and that journey happened. She disliked the film intensely, though, objecting both to Ingrid Bergman playing her and to the invented romance, and saying it was not her story. The Chinese scenes were shot in Wales and the Chinese officer is played by a German actor, both standard practice at the time.
