What Home of the Brave Is About
During the Second World War a small reconnaissance party is sent to map an island held by the Japanese. Tension breaks out between the four white soldiers and Private Peter Moss, the only Black man in the group, and the flashbacks show that what he meets there is what he had already been meeting in civilian life. Directed by Mark Robson, the film was adapted from Arthur Laurents’s play of 1945, in which the character was Jewish; the producer Stanley Kramer changed him into a Black soldier for the film. It was the first of Kramer’s films about racial prejudice and is taken as the start of a career committed to social subjects. James Edwards plays Moss, and the National Board of Review named it the eighth best film of 1949.
