What Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff Is About
This 1949 comedy is one of the films in which Abbott and Costello meet the horror names, though the title misleads. Boris Karloff is not the killer here but a swami staying at the hotel. It starts with the bellhop Freddie making an empty threat to a lawyer; the lawyer is soon found dead and everyone points at Freddie. As Freddie and detective Casey try to find the real culprit, it emerges that almost every guest had a reason. The best passages are the long, near-silent sequences of Costello trying to move bodies around: the film leans on physical comedy far more than on verbal gags. Karloff always looks comfortable in these pictures playing off his own image. Who it's for: viewers who like classic American comedy duos and horror mixed with humour. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a real mystery; the detective plot is only a pretext.
