What Toby Tyler or Ten Weeks with a Circus Is About
Toby Tyler falls out with his uncle, runs away from home and joins a circus. There he becomes friends with a chimpanzee called Mr Stubbs. But the circus is not as much fun as it looks; Harry Tupper, the candy seller, tricks the boy into believing that his family does not want him. So Toby stops thinking about going back. Directed by Charles Barton, the film was adapted from a children's book James Otis wrote at the end of the nineteenth century and was made by Disney. The telling is built for a child audience but there is something real in it: how easy it is to lie to a child. Kevin Corcoran plays Toby. The film ends well, though the road there is not always soft.
