What The Wistful Widow of Wagon Gap Is About
Two travelling salesmen on their way to California stop off in Wagon Gap, Montana, where a notorious outlaw is shot and the pair are convicted of it and sentenced to hang. An old local statute saves them: whoever survives a gunfight must take on the dead man’s debts and dependants. So Chester finds himself responsible for the widow Hawkins and her seven children, working the farm by day and the saloon by night to clear what is owed. Abbott and Costello’s western hangs its entire joke on a single point of law, and Marjorie Main’s widow quietly takes over the centre of the picture.
