What Buenos Aires Zero Degree: The Making of 'Happy Together' Is About
Wong Kar-wai and his crew went to Argentina in the second half of 1996, stayed for months, and Happy Together came out of it. This documentary is the record of those four months: Kwan Pung-leung and Amos Lee point the camera at the set, the hotel rooms and the streets of the city. We see Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung taking tango lessons and drinking coffee, conversations between Wong and his cinematographer Christopher Doyle, and scenes that never made the film. Some of the cut material shows how different a film Happy Together could have been. Chang Chen and Shirley Kwan appear as well, and crew members go back years later to look at the same corners. In sixty-two minutes it documents a production being written while it was shot and shot while it was written.
