What Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell Is About
Carla Campbell lives in a small Italian town and has been receiving money every month since the war from three separate American addresses. Three former soldiers each believe they are the father of her daughter Gia and have been paying quietly for twenty years. None of them knows about the others. Then the old unit comes back to the town together for a reunion. Gina Lollobrigida takes the lead in Melvin Frank's comedy; Peter Lawford, Phil Silvers and Telly Savalas play the three men, with Shelley Winters and Lee Grant also in the cast. The film was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1968. The same set-up turned up again forty years later in Mamma Mia. The telling does not blame the woman; what is really funny is the men's confidence in themselves.
