A Touch of Class

Steve is an American living in London, married with children. Vicki is a divorced Englishwoman. They meet and decide to go to Marbella for a short escape. The holiday does not go as planned; between the plane, the hotel, a suitcase and a bad back, the affair turns into comedy before it starts. They return to London, take a flat, and try to run a regular relationship. The problem is that Steve also loves his wife, and the two of them have genuinely become attached. Melvin Frank's film is one of the romantic comedies of the 1970s. The narrative neither blesses nor condemns the affair; it shows the impossibility of two people trying to run a secret arrangement like daily life. George Segal plays Steve and Glenda Jackson plays Vicki. Jackson won the best actress Oscar for the role. Who it's for: Viewers who like 1970s American comedy, the romantic comedy genre, and Glenda Jackson. Who it's not for: The framing of the affair carries the view of its period and the wife is barely a character. The pace also drops in the second half.
