What Knock on Wood Is About
None of the ventriloquist Jerry Morgan's relationships survive, and the reason is clear enough: as soon as marriage comes up, his two dummies turn nasty and jealous on stage. Meanwhile Papinek, the man who makes his dummies, turns out to belong to a spy ring that has stolen the plans for a secret aircraft. Since Jerry is flying to Zurich that night, the heads of his dummies make an ideal hiding place. Norman Panama and Melvin Frank wrote and directed it together and were nominated for an Academy Award for the script. Danny Kaye sings, performs and gets chased through the whole thing. It is one of the fastest spy comedies going: the logic will not hold up for a second, and it never stops long enough for you to check.
