What Above and Beyond Is About
The film tells the story of Colonel Paul Tibbets, who flew the aircraft that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. He does not know the full capacity of the new weapon but he knows it will do more damage than anything used before and that the death toll will be enormous, and he does not want to be the man who ends that many lives, while the pressure on him keeps building. Because the secrecy erodes his marriage as well, the film is as much a domestic drama as a war picture. Melvin Frank and Norman Panama wrote it with Beirne Lay Jr. and directed for MGM; it opened on 25 December 1952 and went wide in the early months of 1953. Robert Taylor plays Tibbets, Eleanor Parker his wife.
