What Charlie Chan at the Olympics Is About

A newly developed aerial guidance device is stolen and Charlie Chan follows the trail as far as the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Chan's son Lee is competing on the American swimming team, so father and son meet in the same city. The Olympic crowd makes the work of the spies easier, and murder comes into it. Real footage of the 1936 Games is used, and Chan crosses the Atlantic aboard the Hindenburg; both are documents of their moment now. Two things about the film are uncomfortable from here, though. First, the Chinese detective is played by a Swedish-born actor, Warner Oland; a common practice of the period and an indefensible one. Second, the film shows the Olympics in Nazi Germany as a sporting festival scrubbed entirely of politics. Keye Luke plays Lee.
