What Charlie Chan at the Race Track Is About
A friend of Charlie Chan's is found dead aboard a Honolulu bound liner, apparently kicked by his own racehorse. Chan sees at once that it was not an accident, and following it out takes him into an international betting ring. The 1936 film is one of the smoother entries in the series, a closed structure that starts on the ship and ends at the track, hanging its suspense not on the horse but on the money moving around it. One thing has to be said plainly at the outset: the Chinese detective is played by a white actor, Warner Oland, and the character's speech sits inside the mould American cinema of the period built for Asian figures. His son, played by Keye Luke, is the character who steps outside it most often.
