What Hello, Frisco, Hello Is About
San Francisco at the turn of the century. An ambitious vaudeville man carries his quartet from the honky tonks up to the big houses. The higher he climbs, the further he moves from the singer in his own troupe who loves him, and toward a wealthy and selfish heiress. Then it reverses, and he becomes the one left behind. This Technicolor musical with Alice Faye and John Payne was among the biggest earners of the war years. It spends its time in the saloons of the Barbary Coast with a great pile of period songs. The song that came out of it, You'll Never Know, won the Academy Award for best song that year and became the number Alice Faye is remembered by.
