What Charlie Chan in Honolulu Is About
While Charlie is preoccupied with the birth of his first grandchild, his son Jimmy steps into his father’s place and sets out to investigate a murder aboard a freighter in the harbour on his own. Everyone on the ship is a suspect, nobody is who they appear to be, and the false identity the young man adopts gets him into serious trouble. It is one of the lightest entries in the series and the most open to comedy, while still holding together as a closed room puzzle. Sidney Toler plays Chan; the casting of a white actor as the Chinese detective is the same basic objection here.
