What Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel Is About
Lisa Immordino Vreeland's 2011 documentary is about Diana Vreeland, who worked at Harper's Bazaar and Vogue and then ran the costume department at the Metropolitan Museum. It uses as its spine a recording of her telling her own story. Vreeland's method was to take fashion photography out of product promotion and turn it into a stage; her work with Richard Avedon and David Bailey is what answers for that. What is interesting is that she keeps retelling her own life and it stays unclear which part is true; the film does not try to correct this. The archive imagery is rich. There is no critical distance. Who it's for: viewers interested in the history of fashion and portraits of editors. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a critical assessment, or unfamiliar with the fashion world.
