What Elvis on Tour Is About
The documentary follows Elvis Presley's American tour in the spring of 1972: fifteen cities in fifteen days. Stages, rehearsals, planes, hotel corridors. Elvis is in the rhinestone jumpsuit, at the most flamboyant stretch of his career. The songs run from country through gospel to the blues, and the set lists say where he came from. Old television footage cuts in along the way. The man visible offstage is a great deal more tired. Robert Abel and Pierre Adidge direct; ninety-three minutes. One of the people working on the montage was Martin Scorsese. It won the Golden Globe for best documentary in 1973. It turned out to be the last film Elvis made.
