Tengiz Daushvili What Falling Leaves Is About
Niko finishes wine school and takes a job in the laboratory of a collective in Tbilisi, where what he learns has nothing to do with oenology. Annual quotas leave no room for a barrel to be fixed, and all the plant needs in order to bottle a bad one is his signature. The director already knows the wine has turned; he is not asking for an opinion, only for a name. Otar Iosseliani built his first feature around that small refusal in 1966, opening with a documentary prologue on traditional Georgian winemaking and dividing the rest into chapters named for the days of the week. It was briefly banned at home, then took the FIPRESCI prize at Cannes in 1968.
