Amiran Amiranashvili (II) What Farewell, Home Sweet Home Is About
Nicolas is the son of a rich Paris family: his mother closes deals from a helicopter, his father has retreated to a room with a dog, a toy train and a bottle. Without telling them, Nicolas washes windows and dishes at a cafe, and his new friends are drifters, petty thieves and people who sleep outdoors. He can see the snobbery of the world he left; he does not seem to see the cruelty of the one he joined. Otar Iosseliani plays the cheerful drunk of a father himself. The title comes from an old sailors' expression of contempt for dry land, and everyone here is restless wherever they happen to be. It showed out of competition at Cannes in 1999 and took the Louis Delluc Prize that year.
