A porcelain dinner service from the eighteenth century and a painting from the nineteenth pass from hand to hand, and with each change they are broken, cut down, worn away. The fates of the people whose paths cross in Paris follow the trail of those two objects. Otar Iosseliani does not build the film on a plot; instead of following who does what with whom, he sets up an arrangement that shows objects and people wearing out together. The humour comes out of that structure: nobody is at the centre of their own story. It was the first film the Georgian director made in Europe and the start of the period after he left the Soviet Union. It screened at the Venice Film Festival on 29 August 1984. The record dates it 1985 where sources give 1984.
