What Pastorale Is About
Otar Iosseliani shot this in Georgia in 1975, and it follows a young string quartet who come to a mountain village to rest and rehearse. It stays well away from any idyllic picture of rural life: the villagers no longer sing the old songs, what the musicians play means nothing to them, and the two worlds sit beside each other without ever quite meeting. The Soviet authorities decided it was insufficiently uplifting and shelved it; it reached a limited release only in 1982, the year it took the FIPRESCI prize at Berlin. Iosseliani left the Soviet Union soon afterwards and settled in France. The title is a musical term, and what the film records is the absence of the idyll it names.
