What And Then There Was Light Is About
The film takes place in a village in Casamance, in southern Senegal. The villagers sleep, eat, make love and pray for rain; the days run in an order of their own. Meanwhile the timber lorries and the tree fellers are slowly getting nearer. Once the forest is gone the village has nowhere to go either, and the people are pushed into the shanty towns on the edges of the big cities. The cast was made up entirely of people from that village, and as a salute to silent cinema the account moves on intertitles alone. Otar Iosseliani’s hundred and five minute film was completed in 1989.
