The film takes place in four separate times. These are Georgia in the sixteenth century, Georgia under Stalin, Georgia today and Paris today. The same actors appear in all four. Moving between the parts, the account shows power and violence repeating themselves in changed forms. The film tells this not by lamenting but through a dry humour. The tension between faces that stay the same and periods that change is the real idea. The hundred and seventeen minutes are divided among four times. The cast is made up largely of Georgian actors. Otar Iosseliani’s film, a joint French, Georgian, Italian, Swiss and Russian production, was completed in 1996.
