Otar Ioseliani's 1970 Georgian film follows Gia, who plays timpani in a theatre orchestra in Tbilisi. Gia spends his days wandering the city, moving from friend to friend, finishing nothing, yet always arriving in time for the single note he has to strike on stage. The film consists almost entirely of that running about. There is no plot; Gia's day advances by chance and the camera follows. Ioseliani presents wasting time as a way of living and neither praises nor condemns it. Though made in the Soviet period the film establishes no ideological frame at all, which was one of the things censors objected to at the time. Its ending arrives, after all that lightness, unexpectedly hard. Who it's for: viewers open to Georgian cinema and to eventless, observational narrative. Who it's not for: viewers expecting dramatic development; the film stays scattered to the end, deliberately.
