What Fear and Trembling Is About
Amélie, a Belgian born and raised in Japan, returns to Tokyo at twenty-two on a one-year contract as a translator in a large company. Every step she takes without understanding the hierarchy drops her one rung further: first serving tea, then photocopying, finally cleaning the lavatories. Alain Corneau adapted Amélie Nothomb's novel, based on her own experience. Its best quality is refusing to vindicate either side; the company is not cruel, it is applying its own logic, and Amélie keeps misreading it. Sylvie Testud won the César for the part. Most of the dialogue is in Japanese and the office is barely left. Who it is for: viewers who like stories of cultural collision and office drama. Who it is not for: anyone who will find the film's portrait of Japan one-sided.
