What La Menace Is About

Henri Savin has run the haulage company of his lover Dominique for years. Now he has decided to leave her and go away with Julie. Dominique will not accept it; first she threatens, then she comes after the two of them. One night things go wrong beyond repair, and Savin chooses not to tell the police exactly what happened. That single decision turns him step by step into a fugitive, and a pursuit begins that runs all the way to Canada. Alain Corneau directs, with Yves Montand as Savin, Carole Laure as Julie and Marie Dubois as Dominique. A hundred and seventeen minutes. The second half plays out largely inside trucks; Corneau builds the tension not out of dialogue but out of distance and exhaustion.
