What Five Dedicated to Ozu Is About

Finding himself in a house on the Caspian shore, Kiarostami picked up a small digital camera and began filming the five hundred metres of beach in front of it. What came out is five fixed shots, each running around sixteen minutes: a piece of driftwood worked over by the waves, a stretch of shore where the older passers-by stop to look at the sea, indistinct shapes on a winter beach, loud ducks crossing one way and then back, and at night a pond with frogs, a storm, and then sunrise. The title records the dedication to Yasujiro Ozu, and it is the first work in which Kiarostami tested what video could do.
