What Forbidden Dreams Is About
Leo Popper is a contented family man in rural Bohemia in the years before the Nazi occupation. Money forces him to move his family to the city, where he becomes an enterprising vacuum cleaner salesman, has a run of affairs, meets boxers and celebrated portrait painters, and schemes to buy the perfect pond to satisfy his passion for fishing. When the Nazis take control the comedy turns bitter: he loses his lake, his job and finally his family. Karel Kachyňa’s ninety one minute film was adapted from the autobiographical stories in which Ota Pavel wrote about his own Jewish Czech family, and it won the Czechoslovak Film Critics prize in 1986 along with first prize at the Montpellier film festival.
