What Long Live the Republic Is About
It is the spring of 1945 and the front is closing in on a small Moravian village. The weakest boy in the place is beaten by his father and knocked about by the other boys, but he has imagination on his side and a wiry toughness nobody can break. As the German troops pull back and the Red Army advances the village falls into turmoil, and the boy moves through the chaos taking his share of the blows while always staying a step ahead. Karel Kachyňa’s film tells the end of the war not as a victory but through the eyes of a child who finds what is leaving and what is arriving equally frightening. He wrote it with Jan Procházka, and it opened on 5 November 1965.
