What Freedom Is About
Šarūnas Bartas’s 2000 film takes place in the Moroccan desert. Two men and a woman are left stranded there after a smuggling run goes wrong; they walk at night and hide during the day. When one of them goes off alone, the remaining two shelter for a while with a group of Berbers and then head out into the desert with no food. They do not trust each other: he despises her, she is afraid of him. There is almost no dialogue in the film, and none of the characters share a language, so the whole thing proceeds through landscape, faces and duration. It played in competition at Venice in 2000.
