Josie lives in a small Irish town, has a learning disability, and minds the petrol station at the edge of it. He sleeps there and eats there; the station is his whole life. When summer comes, David, the son of his boss's girlfriend, arrives to help out. For the first time Josie has people to spend time with; he buys the kids beer, sits with them, and feels part of a group. But he cannot work out that he is a grown man, or how some of it will look. One mistake ends everything. Lenny Abrahamson directs, with Pat Shortt as Josie. Eighty-five minutes. It played in the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes and took a prize there. Shortt is known in Ireland as a comedian; what he does here is something else entirely.
