What Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Border 3: Ghost Tears Is About
Motoko and Batou behave like a couple on holiday. In fact they are on assignment: an organisation is attacking symbolic targets and there is an order behind the attacks. At the same time a large company making prosthetic limbs is under investigation. Motoko carries her own questions about her body; which memories are really hers is uncertain. The narrative runs the bombing investigation and her relationship with Batou at once. Kazuchika Kise directs. It belongs to the Arise series in the Ghost in the Shell world and is the third part. The Arise series takes the characters at a younger point and tells how the team was formed; it is a different timeline from the earlier films. Maaya Sakamoto gives Motoko's voice and the character's visual design is markedly different from earlier versions. The matter it works at is the prosthetic body and memory; the question of whom a body belongs to is built through the limbs the company produces. This part is more personal than the others in the series and gives more weight to relationship than to action. The animation is detailed; the city scenes and interface designs are at the known level of the series. Its limit is independence; the narrative requires having seen the two earlier parts. Who it is for: people following the series and viewers who like science fiction animation. Who it is not for: it is not an entry point, the technical terms are dense, and the plot is convoluted.
