What Giovanna's Father Is About
Bologna, 1938. Michele Casali teaches art at the school his daughter Giovanna attends. She is withdrawn and fragile, and her father's constant protection does not steady her, it presses harder. Then Giovanna kills a classmate, and the father chooses to stay beside her. Fascist Italy, the racial laws and the war move along behind all of it. Silvio Orlando plays the father and took the best actor prize at Venice for it; Alba Rohrwacher plays Giovanna. A quiet, cold film from Pupi Avati that offers no consolation.
