What Graduation Party Is About
Pupi Avati's 1985 Italian film follows a divorced baker living a plain life and his interest in a woman from a very different world. He does what he can to get inside that circle, and the difference in class shows itself at every step. Avati tells it without either mocking him or asking for pity; he holds the ridiculous and the moving sides of the man's effort at the same time. Carlo Delle Piane, in the years when he was becoming the actor for exactly this kind of part, is at the centre again, opposite Aurore Clément. Quiet, measured, and leaning on an Italian provincial melancholy.
