A School Trip

An old woman recalls the finest memory of her life: the school trip her class was given as a reward before their final exams. In the spring of 1914 a class walks from Bologna to Florence across the Apennines, three days on the road with two teachers. Pupi Avati builds it as a memory being looked back on, and lets the whole film carry the sadness of children who have no idea about the war they will walk into a year later. What starts as a youth comedy grows heavier with every mile. Carlo Delle Piane plays one of the teachers and Riz Ortolani wrote the score. It was selected in competition at Venice in 1983 and took Nastro d’Argento awards for direction, actor, score and original screenplay.
