What Goyokin Is About
Magobei Wakizaka is a samurai living alone, having left his clan after witnessing a crime. The Sabai clan deliberately ran a ship aground to seize an official gold shipment from Sado island, then wiped out the fishing village that saw it happen. When he learns the same scheme is being set up a second time, Magobei goes back. Hideo Gosha stages the swordplay in snow and on empty shoreline. The image keeps widening: small human figures, enormous white spaces. The choice is not incidental. Goyokin was the first Japanese production shot in Panavision, and Gosha uses the wide frame for solitude. Tatsuya Nakadai leads, opposite Tetsuro Tamba. On release it succeeded with critics and at the box office. Who it's for: Viewers who like jidaigeki and samurai cinema, and revenge stories built on moral guilt. Who it's not for: The pace is slow and the action is sparse, leaving long gaps for anyone expecting continuous combat.
