What Hunter in the Dark Is About
An ageing yakuza boss in Edo wants a clean exit from the life, and to get one he first needs a good sword beside him. The man he finds is Yataro, one-eyed, with no memory of his past and no loyalty owed to anyone; he rises fast, and then the number of enemies around the boss outgrows what either of them can count. Taken from a novel by Shotaro Ikenami, it is among the darkest of Hideo Gosha’s period films. Loyalty and ambition cannot be fed at the same time here, and every character is bound to someone who will eventually charge them for it. Tatsuya Nakadai’s boss is calculating even when he looks merciful.
