What The Wolves Is About

Seiji Iwahashi has served part of a ten year sentence for killing the boss of the rival Kanno family when a general amnesty, declared for the new emperor's accession in 1926, puts him back on the street. He returns to find that his own Enokiya family, after the death of its boss, has been absorbed into the Kanno syndicate. Nobody on either side has forgotten anything. Hideo Gosha's 1971 film sits inside the ninkyo eiga tradition without glorifying the idea of loyalty that tradition is built on, and it does not make the violence look good either. Tatsuya Nakadai leads it, with a score by Masaru Sato, Kurosawa's regular composer.
