What Bandits vs. Samurai Squadron Is About
Kumokiri Nizaemon is a samurai who abandoned his class and now stands at the head of a gang of thieves. He sets his outlaws to rob the castle of the clan he once served, while an investigation unit that has been after him for years closes in. Hideo Gosha’s film runs past two hours and forty minutes and shows the Edo period as dirty rather than splendid: an order in which loyalty can be bought and class holds people prisoner. Tatsuya Nakadai leads, with Shima Iwashita and Tetsuro Tamba. The plan itself and the betrayals matter more than the swordplay.
