What Onimasa: A Japanese Godfather Is About
Hideo Gosha's 1982 epic follows Onimasa, the boss of a small yakuza clan on Shikoku, across three decades of clan wars, strike-breaking and blood debts. Tatsuya Nakadai plays a man who believes he is an old-fashioned man of honour and whose daily work keeps proving otherwise. The film is adapted from Tomiko Miyao's novel, and its Japanese title points not at him but at the women of the Kiryuin house. Matsue, the daughter he adopts, is the one the story finally belongs to, and the distance between the story a man tells about himself and what he actually does is the real subject.
