What Happy New Year Is About
A man released from prison under a New Year amnesty tries to pick his life up where he left it. Two things are waiting: the plan he made to rob a jeweller in out-of-season Cannes, and the woman he met while making it. Claude Lelouch shoots the robbery not as suspense but as two people weighing each other up. He also mocks himself in it: the couple watch his own A Man and a Woman at the cinema and she thinks very little of it. Lino Ventura and Francoise Fabian are excellent together. An American remake followed in 1987.
