What Les Miserables Is About
Henri Fortin, poor and unable to read, is driving a family fleeing the Germans south during the Second World War when they start reading him Victor Hugo's novel. The more he hears, the more he sees how closely his own life resembles the man's in the book. Claude Lelouch does not adapt the novel directly; he moves it into the twentieth century and sets real scenes from Les Miserables alongside it. Jean-Paul Belmondo plays both Fortin and the Jean Valjean of his imagination, in one of the best parts of his later career. It won the Golden Globe for foreign film.
