In Claude Lelouch's film a gang of five turn robbery from a trade into a world tour. Lino Ventura, Jacques Brel, Charles Denner, Charles Gérard and Aldo Maccione hijack a plane, then kidnap a singer for ransom, then become revolutionaries, changing identity each time according to the fashion of the moment. That is the idea: how quickly, at the end of the sixties and the start of the seventies, the language of politics, revolt and revolution turned into a performance. The gang is not sincere, but nobody around them is either, and Lelouch tells it in a cheerful register. Jacques Brel's performance is what stays with you; a man known as a singer works here with full comic timing. The film drew large audiences in France and became one of Lelouch's most-watched works. Who it is for: viewers who like seventies French popular cinema and loosely built comedy. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a tight plot, since the film proceeds in episodes and has no interest in logic.
