The film begins in the 1890s with a poor tenant farmer in a Finnish village who drains a bog and makes himself a field. Across three generations of the family the village grows, the reckoning with the church and the landowners hardens, the workers’ movement gains strength and the country is dragged into civil war in 1918. People who have lived side by side in the same village for years end up on opposite sides; the account shows the war not as a lesson in history but as the man you know putting you against a wall. Edvin Laine’s hundred and eighty six minute Finnish film was adapted from Väinö Linna’s novel and became one of the most widely seen productions in Finland. It was completed in 1968.
