What He's a Woman, She's a Man Is About
Wing loves pop music and wants to enter the competition run by Sam, the producer of her favourite singer Rose. But the competition is only open to men. She cuts her hair, changes how she dresses and enters as a man. She wins. Sam takes her on. The problem is that Sam starts to like this young man, and it makes him ask questions about himself he has never asked. Rose, meanwhile, works out that Wing is a woman. Peter Chan directs. Anita Yuen plays Wing, Leslie Cheung plays Sam and Carina Lau plays Rose. Anita Yuen was named best actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards for the part. The film uses the shape of the disguise comedy but does not leave the matter to misunderstanding; Sam's crisis about his own orientation is at the centre, and taking that up directly was unusual for the time. The Hong Kong pop industry is the second subject: how stars are produced, how images are managed and how singers' personalities are constructed, told from inside. Given Leslie Cheung's own public position the part carries a further meaning, and the film uses that knowingly. It was a large success and a sequel followed. Who it is for: viewers who like nineties Hong Kong comedy and narratives about the music business. Who it is not for: the humour is of its time, some scenes are coarse by present measure, and the ending returns to the mould.
