What He Ain't Heavy, He's My Father Is About
Yuen looks down on his father for being too generous and too quick to forgive, until a freak accident drops him thirty years into the past and he meets the man at his own age. What he finds is the same person, already spending himself on the neighbourhood. Peter Chan and Lee Chi-Ngai build this as folklore rather than science fiction; the door to the past turns out to be a manhole cover. The film is really a thank-you letter to the Hong Kong cinema of the fifties and sixties and to the tenement solidarity those films recorded. Father and son are played by two Tony Leungs who are not related.
