What Hue and Cry Is About
London after the war, half the city still rubble. A boy called Joe notices something odd in the comic he reads every week: details in the story match, exactly, robberies that happen the next day. He works out that somebody is altering the text before it goes to print, and that this is how a gang gets its orders. Neither the writer nor the printer knows. When the police will not believe him, Joe rounds up his friends. Charles Crichton directs, with Alastair Sim and Jack Warner. It is counted as the first of the Ealing comedies. In the finale hundreds of children move against the gang across the bombed-out ground of London, every one of them raised in those ruins.
