What The Battle of the Sexes Is About
Robert MacPherson, who owns a long-established family firm in Edinburgh, wants to drag it into the twentieth century and enlists Angela Barrows, the American businesswoman he meets on the way. Barrows is fast, condescending and entirely unbothered by anyone's feelings. Mr Martin, the accountant who has sat at the same desk for decades, has other ideas. Charles Crichton's 1960 comedy comes from a James Thurber story, and it takes the war between the old way of doing business and the new one somewhere steadily darker. Peter Sellers plays Martin without once raising his voice, entirely from the inside, and everything dangerous in the film lives in that quiet.
