What I fratelli De Filippo Is About
Naples at the start of the twentieth century: Titina, Eduardo and Peppino live with their mother, Luisa De Filippo. Their father is Eduardo Scarpetta, the most celebrated playwright and actor of the day, but he is introduced to them as an uncle, because none of the three is legally acknowledged. They are kept off the stage, the Scarpetta household does not count them as family, and when he dies the estate goes to his legitimate children. All three would carry their mother's name into the front rank of Italian theatre. Sergio Rubini's film is not about that ascent but about the humiliation that came first. Mario Autore, Domenico Pinelli and Anna Ferraioli Ravel star.
